Doula FAQ

What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?

A doula is a professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to the birthing mother and her partner. A midwife is a medical professional responsible for delivering the baby and managing your health during pregnancy and birth. We work alongside midwives and hospital staff as a team, we do not replace them. Our focus is on your comfort, emotional well-being, and advocacy.

Why do I need a doula if I have my partner with me?

Partners play an invaluable role, and we work together as a team! A doula complements your partner by offering experienced support, allowing them to be more present without the pressure of navigating the entire birth alone. We help guide both of you through the process with confidence and calm.

Can a doula support me during a C-section?

Absolutely! A doula can support you emotionally during a C-section, helping explain the process, ensuring you feel relaxed, and providing reassurance to both you and your partner. We stay with you before, during, and after the procedure. If the hospital allows it, we can join you in the operation room and stay with you while your partner stays with your baby after birth.

Will you stay with me postpartum?

As a birth doula, I stay with you for up to a few hours after birth, ensuring you and your baby are settled and comfortable. I also visit you twice after birth to check in, offer support, and help with any initial postpartum needs. If you require ongoing postpartum care, there are specialized postpartum doulas who focus on supporting families during the weeks and months following birth.

Do you use aromatherapy or homeopathy?

These practices are not part of a doula's standard scope of care. However, some doulas may offer aromatherapy, homeopathy, herbology or accupunture and such as additional services if they are trained in these areas. My focus is on providing emotional, physical, and informational support, and I can help you explore complementary options if they align with your preferences. I can also refer you to trusted, trained professionals.

Can you make photos of my birth?

Yes, I am happy to! We can discuss what kind of photos or videos you would like from your birth. I can use a phone, but I also have a Nikon D7200 DSLR camera which I can bring to your birth. I am however a hobby photographer, not a professional birth photographer. I will not provide the same quality photos as a trained birth photograper, but I will do my best to provide you with some beautiful visual memories.

Is a doula "woo-woo"?

Not at all! Some doulas incorporate spirituality and holistic methods and others take a more down-to-earth approach. Regardless of personal beliefs, the role of a doula is rooted in providing practical, non-medical support based on knowledge and experience. My focus is on balancing holistic and evidence-based care in a way that suits you best, so you can have a positive birth experience—whatever that looks like for you.

How does having a doula impact my birth experience?

Studies show that having a doula can reduce the need for medical interventions and pain relief, while increasing your satisfaction with the birth experience. Our goal is to help you feel empowered, supported, and in control of your choices. Here you can find statistical findings from research on doula support during birth.

Will you speak for me during birth?

No, a doula usually does not speak for you, but I can help you communicate your wishes clearly to your medical team. A doula can encourage you to ask questions, speak up, or remind you of your preferences. I’ll advocate for your birth plan and ensure your preferences are respected, helping you and your partner feel heard.

What does a doula not do?

A doula does not provide (medical) advice, make diagnoses, or perform medical procedures. We do not catch babies or replace the role of healthcare professionals like doctors or midwives. Doulas do not make decisions for you or pressure you into certain choices. A doula does not take over the role of your partner or any other birth companion you would like to be there. While I can offer general breastfeeding guidance and support, I do not provide specialized lactation assistance. However, I can refer you to a certified lactation consultant and other health specialists if needed.
